How do we start the year off on the right foot? With new books of course!
For the month of January I have two books from Book of the Month! Because I’m a Book of the Month BFF, I get one of the finalists for Book of the Year in my January box – so I went with A Woman is No Man by Etaf Rum. While I’m intrigued by the Book of the Year winner – Daisy Jones and the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid, I also have to admit that it also doesn’t sound like a book that would traditionally be up my alley. So many people have said good things about it that I’m curious. Perhaps I’ll pick it up at a later date.
Of the five January picks for BOTM, I went with Things in Jars by Jess Kidd. This is an early release and it sounds like something that is completely up my alley: the quick take from the BOTM website says: “Strong Victorian women dealing with wildly unladylike things. Like death. And maybe a kidnapped mermaid or two.”
Now on a side note, I also have other books to finish. The C. H. Armchair Detective Society book for January is The Collector’s Apprentice by B. A. Shapiro, which so far is proving to be really interesting. I just finished re-reading Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire because I received the illustrated edition for Christmas. Very well worth it, but it did feel like there were less illustrations in this one than there had been in the previous three. This is possibly because this book is longer comparatively. But Jim Kay’s illustrations are still as amazing as ever. Spinning Silver is also back on my list after finishing Uprooted by Naomi Novik. I’ve heard it’s not as good, but Uprooted was so good that “not as good” couldn’t be too bad.
Kel Kade’s Fate of the Fallen is also back at the top of this list because my local bookseller asked my thoughts when I finished it. So I will likely read Kel Kade before Spinning Silver, just to make sure. Somewhere after that will be The Essex Serpent, which I was given eons ago and my aunt just asked if I had read it. (She was not the one who gave it to me, just curious if I had.) If two different people think I should, clearly this is something I should read.
Phew! Lots to read! Better get cracking!
Interested in Book of the Month? I love my ability to stay on top of new books coming out, and I get to choose out of five books! If I’m not interested in any of the five books, BOTM allows you to skip a month. Definitely wonderful. You can join by clicking here: Book of the Month
