I have a list somewhere of things I’d like to try in my life time. In some cases, these things do not mean just try, but fully learn and understand. Many of you know that I am a wine, tea, and hot chocolate connoisseur (which I sometimes think is just a fancy term for fanatic). One thing that has never really been added to that list thanks to my insistance on not becoming a caffeine addict is coffee.

However, that being said, I have always wanted to learn how to use an espresso machine.

Part of it is that I have always wanted to know how they made such ridiculously amazing hot chocolate. Part of it is that I have always loved those little tiny cups that espresso comes in. And part of it is that I have a curiosity to learn about the other top drink in the world that people are a connoisseur of. Hot chocolate is not one of the top three, coffee is. So why not learn coffee and add it to my list of drinks I know far too much about.

There are worse things in the world than being a discriminant drinker.

I should have known when I turned down kool-aid at camp for being too watery that I would end up here some day. I am a woman who wants flavor, real flavor, in her drinks.

Anyway, since I have been on trial with a new job at a coffee shop, they’ve been teaching me how to use a real espresso machine. What did I do on my first day? Burned my hand on the steam wand. Hot steam, plus wet towel – really it should have been a no brainer not to put my hand there. My hand has nicely recovered. There’s still a couple of red spots but nothing that will prevent me from using it.

This has just inspired me, however, to buy an espresso machine to practice with. Which was a bit discouraging when I realized that most high quality home espresso machines are around $300. Well, suffice it to say, I found one that will work for the purpose I need it for that is more in my price range.

And in the process, I’m buying caramel syrup to make caramel steamers. I will not feel fully accomplished with this until I can successfully make my favorite drink for myself. At least, my favorite drink besides hot chocolate when it comes to hot drinks.
