Sometimes having a blog is just about posting what’s going on around you, what’s on your mind, and getting things off your chest. At least, that’s how Dr. Watson is supposed to treat his blog in the hit BBC series, Sherlock.
I remember questioning the therapists sanity in Sherlock when I first watched it. Could she honestly be serious about going online and posting your daily life there for just anyone to read?
But what I forgot to take into account is that people do that all the time. Middle school students are getting in trouble for going online and saying things they don’t really mean. (At least, that’s what they tell the public. And you know what? We all buy it because we’ve all done the same thing. Sarcasm online just doesn’t come off the same way as it does in person.)
I just think it’s odd that it’s the therapist that suggests it.
I have so much going on in my life right now that I just wouldn’t want to post online. Maybe if it was to a small select circle of friends or family, I might post it. I have certainly complained about life events to those people on Facebook before. However, this blog is a much more public forum. It doesn’t seem like it. That’s the problem with the internet. If you don’t see your ratings and page views going any higher than 5, you begin to lull yourself into a false sense of security. And that’s probably when your blog post about that incident you didn’t want anyone knowing about makes breaking news.
What can one post when you want to keep you to yourself but at the same time let the world in on the small stuff… It’s a very difficult question. You’ll notice that I walk a very fine line with most of that stuff when I write these Day to Day blog posts. Some of these posts are very obviously very detailed in my every day life, but things like what my partner looks like, people’s names, and the like, are changed or left out completely.
In terms of being a story of me, this blog is quite acurate. In terms of being a story of the people I know, I try to keep anonymity as high as possible. The people I know I try to play as smaller players and not on the larger scale.
On the other hand, I can feel free to write about world events and my opinions on them because lets face it: It’s all over the news already anyway. Which leads me to blog post number 2 for today…
