I created a list of goals at the beginning of the year. Normally I don’t do checkpoints like this, but seeing as I felt a bunch of them had been completed, I figured I ought to really stop and go over them. Apparently with an audience. So, here we are.
1) I want to audition for a local production of something. I can act, I swear. I’ve just always been very hesitant to audition for these things.
I did, in fact, audition for Oliver!, so this one is done. Fortunately, the goal didn’t say “Get in to a local production” because I didn’t. But I am on the sound crew, so that’s something.
2) Keep doing what I am doing. Working where I do has been a lot of fun, even if it is also a lot of work.
Well, yes. I am doing this. More news on that possibly later.
3) Do my best by the standards of USA Dance, and in that vein – try to be more social and welcoming.
Still working on the being social and welcoming thing. It is hard to be social with new people when the old people are so willing to be social with you, but I’m getting better at it.
4) Apply for graduate school finally. The lack of classroom learning is beginning to make me miss college. Also – most colleges come with food courts.
Well, I started the application process, and then decided I didn’t actually want to do the program. At the same time, I was considering 4 or 5 different viable career paths. I’m more decided now, but I still think holding off on applying was still a good decision.
5) Eat better. As in, three meals a day. Get up early, stretch, eat breakfast, start day, eat lunch, end day, eat dinner, relax. Sound like a plan? Maybe actually start trying it?
Still, amazingly, working on this one. Got better at it over the past week or so, but that’s a story I’m not willing to share here.
6) Read more books. Write more books. I’m already a good chunk of the way through Taliesin, so I can totally finish it and the rest of The Pendragon Cycle.
When the ideas you come up with really can’t be written about, you end up quite lost for stuff to write about. Worse, I know the story of Grapdorn Falls so well that it’s actually difficult to write at this point. Pocket Full of Posies has been difficult to write ever since shortly before I broke up with Gareth. He was most of the inspiration behind that one as it were. Still, the relevant writing exercise in designing that one may get it to completion given a long enough writing sprint. And my recent string of romance novels interrupted my reading The Pendragon Cycle. Well, that’s good… Not really. But you know what I mean… Oh, and I practically sprinted through The Last Symbol the other day, so there’s some real reading for you.
7) Quit reading Fan Fiction. I know it’s addicting. You’ve quit before, you can do it again. And you feel so much more accomplished when you waste a day reading a novel, not some junkie fan site.
DONE! Well, sort of. You know how addictions run. I’m on week two (or three) and counting. Very nearly broke down today and went back to the fan fiction site, but managed to pick up a romance novel instead. Romance novels (at this point) have become like nicotine patches to a smoker. Need to read a fan fic? Here’s a romance novel. But it is easier not to be halfway through a fan fiction and have to go to work and feel like work is getting in the way of your fan fiction. It’s a bad feeling.
8) Visit Britain. Scotland and Wales more precisely. Do it! And make friends while you’re at it.
Well, this one is vaguely close to completion. I will be going to Scotland at the end of the summer! Very excited about this. Making friends while I’m at it may be the more difficult part, but given that (other than visiting family) I will probably be spending a good chunk of time on my own in the beautiful city of Edinburgh, I might be able to pull it off. You think? I might even get down to visit Cardiff at some point during the trip, but that all depends on how much money I manage to save up for the trip in the mean time. We’ll see. Maybe I’ll get to see The Doctor Who Experience!!!!! That would be fun!
Anyway, now that it’s very clear what needs working on, what has been done, and what is probably scratched off the goal list, I think it’s time to sit down and maybe attempt to write a bit more. What do you think?
